ULF: 0I by Mick Chillage

Its been a. while since have worked on or released a long form ambient track/album. There have been some longish pieces that featured on some recent releases but none have been over forty minutes!

In early November I began to experiment with some patches I had created on my beloved Prophet Rev2, one in particular had a rather expansive sonic depth with super low bases when certain filter envelopes were tweaked.

This sound is performed as the opening passage and continues as the main foundation of the piece, played polyphonically were the low, mid & high keys are utilised which results in rumbling lows, pleasant mids and at times searing highs.

This passage seemed to inspire me on an almost instinctive level as I worked, new additional elements seemed to be chosen and edited & played to fit with ease.

I spent a few days getting the arrangement and mix to work the elements as a long form track. I now had something that appeared to be darkly mysterious and foreboding yet as the piece progressed it introduces a shift of mood to hopefulness or enlightened senses & back again to the dark aesthetic it began with.

The last part of the creative process was creating a fitting title,
I struggled with this due the shifting moods and overall feel of the track. Its working title was simply "Untitled Long Form". I eventually settled on the abbreviated ULF: 0I, I feel this keeps its mysterious side and leaves the listener more room to interpret the track however they wish and maybe it leaves it open to a series of ULF tracks in the future?
