Satellite by Mina
Mina has been on the rise throughout 2016, thanks to her acclaimed debut ‘Kabala’ EP with Enchufada, a feature in Fact Magazine and a Radio 1 guest-mix. Her blend of dancehall, afropop, funky and grime-inspired synths has caught the attention of tastemakers such as Jamz Supernova & Toddla T and her tracks have received radio play on BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra & Beats 1. She now returns with follow up ‘Satellite,’ a five-track journey through a variety of joyous rhythms and melodies.
The first track ‘Mama,’ is a collaboration with Wanted; a dancehall-inflected vocalist who is a member of WAYout in Freetown. The song is both uplifting and bittersweet, as Wanted’s shares poignant stories from his childhood in the lyrics. The instrumental version ‘Satellite Riddim’ is also included on the EP.
‘Balafon Bata’ is collaboration with Sillati who is also a member of WAYout, and featured on Mina’s Enchufada release. The track is a percussive roller and samples traditional Sierra Leonean instruments; the balafon, kele and bata.
Finally, ‘Body Good Riddim’ is a melodic ride through afrobeats and dancehall, topped off with a shimmering layer of steelpans, and ‘Bababounce’ is a polyrhythmic afro-funky track that has been tearing up dancefloors around the UK.
