Rain clouds knock at my window as I sleep
So loud I can hardly get a wink and so my sheets
Bind me to the bed like x-ray aprons made of lead
Like families plucking at their webs of obligation

If I got lost among the streets of other lands
Backpack, Lonely Planet, and a journal in my hand
Would they find me then, among my temporary friends,
In mufti in my elephant pants on Khao San Road?

Or could I float free
Like Larry Walters in his lawn chair floating over Long Beach?
All alone on the Inspiration I,
Drifting north towards LAX with his sandwiches and pellet gun

Movies stream upon the screen inside my brain
I dreamed I was running through a city in the rain
In the empty streets, cars floated downstream to the sea,
I was out of breath, ankle deep, and sinking slowly,

When I cancel cause I feel unwell
I think I'm just trying to escape myself
Opened up my North Face pack to find myself upon my back
Carrying along my past, like stowaways

How can I float free
