Sometimes I feel like I've run out of words
What's the point in even trying?
Sometimes I feel like I've run out of sounds

Everything ends in the end
Sometimes things get better
Sometimes they pass, like the winter ending,
Dark clouds, or stormy weather
Sometimes they don't, you just get older
Without some redemptive cinematic arc
Wasting your life, more or less,
On momentary pleasures and mediocre art
Lighting matches to stay warm in the dark

What if I want to believe
I'll hit peak misery soon, and life will improve,
The world is kind, I still have time
To do everything I wanted to do
Will you lie to me?

Sometimes things don't get better

Sometimes I think about the trees that fall
On the misty mountain slopes--is there a sound?
Without a singer, can it be a song?
Was I ever even here at all?
A passing tone, a footnote,
Or a clarion call?
