Skeleton Key by miscellaneous owl

I went to Oklahoma to see the museum of bones
Bats hung like broken umbrellas
Thin and bare and windblown
Thin and bare and windblown
Yeah, in the cabinet of wonders, the beetles ate away at old flesh
Time-lapse decay, all the softness goes away,
Until the hardness at the heart is all that's left
That hardness is all that's left

And I thought of the skeleton inside of me
Locked doors
Opened by a skeleton key
And I said

The shell of the dead armadillo was set in a crescent moon curve
(Just like the moon)
I thought of all these little mouths laid silent
And the calls I never returned
Yeah, all that tenderness rotted to earth

And I
Thought of all the brittle bones of these spines
Stretching between us
Like a Morse code line
Stretching through time

When I kissed my grandmother goodbye when she was dying
She cried and begged me not to leave
But I walked out of that room, and flew back to Wisconsin
And locked that door with a skeleton key
