Solo Flips by MLTZR/Aleks Izotov

Solo Flips is a joint effort between Portland-based MLTZR and Washington DC-based Aleks Izotov. Composed mostly over the course of one week through Zoom sessions and Dropbox transfers, it captures the energy of the stream-of-conscious decision making with which it was made and reflects the deep rapport between its collaborators.

The project was originally conceived as a remix of Aleks Izotov’s solo piano EP, and each of its four tracks is based on a track from the EP. Unlike a typical remix, though, Solo Flips goes far beyond rearranging the sounds of the source material. Instead, it uses the samples as spring boards for experiments in texture, melody, and rhythm, sometimes all but abandoning the original sounds. Each sample becomes a portal into a different imagined space.

MLTZR and Aleks Izotov have been friends and collaborators since 2009 when they drank mini Coronas in the suburbs of Phoenix, AZ, as high school kids who made beats and played jazz. The love of beats continued into college where they studied jazz in class and worked on hip hop in dorms and storage closets, and that love of beats and jazz is what’s ultimately at the heart of Solo Flips.
