Divine from Science by MMYYKK
As the title suggests, the composition is an ode to the Divine Feminine. MMYYKK expands… “Black women taught me how to love. Women literally save the world every day. This track was a way for me to express appreciation and sing praises to the women in my life.”
An exceedingly difficult artist to pigeonhole, MMYYKK (pronounced ‘Mike’) works concurrently within the realms of soul, future-funk, R&B, hip hop, jazz & fusion; his sound equally indebted to his fellow west coast natives Thundercat and Flying Lotus as it is to synth experimentalists Herbie Hancock and Stevie wonder.
On the other end of the musical spectrum, MMYYKK is also an accomplished ambient artist, having released ‘Mellow Moods & Meditations’ in 2020 as well as producing ‘PASSAGE’ - a black mental health & wellness initiative in collaboration with okayplayer which debuted earlier this year.
Divine serves as a perfect teaser for the full record, balancing musicianship with playfulness, spirituality and social responsibility in a way that few artists manage - all while sounding completely effortless and 100% funky. MMYYKK enters the world stage with a timeless classic with crossover potential.
