Plant Ragas by modern biology
'Plant Ragas' is a new nature-based EP by viral tiktok plant and mushroom musician Modern Biology. Using the natural bioelectricity of flora and fungi as interpreted by a modular synthesizer, and layered with high definition field recordings, the Vancouver based biologist and musician crafts beautiful ambient soundscapes that capture the literal vibrations of a certain place and time. His short form work has been viewed over 100 million times on tiktok and instagram, leading to features in The Guardian, The Verge, Vice, BBC and many others.
Sometimes haunting and sometimes uplifting, this short EP further's the producer's explorations by incorporating the specificity of the Indian classical system of raga into the compositions. The first track, made with the bioelectricity of an old growth Bigleaf Maple in the wilds of British Columbia, was recorded in the morning in the scale of Raga Bhairavi - a morning Raga. The second, made with Pacific Arbutus berries, was recorded with the inspiration of the afternoon Raga Multani. And the third features the ubiquitous Bullwhip Kelp in the evening Raga of Bhoopali.
In all 3 tracks on 'Plant Ragas', Modern Biology has completed the listening experience with additional drones and synthesizers, creating a timeless work that can be listened to next to Eno, Green-House and the early Japanese ambient pioneers of the 80s.
