Dream Void by William Covert

Batteur infatigable au sein de Space Blood, Droughts et Rust Ring, William Covert plonge ici dans les profondeurs troubles d’un Dream Void aussi ludique qu’hallucinant. À la croisée du free jazz, du prog avant-gardiste, de l’impro noise et du post-rock synthétique, cet EP déjoue les étiquettes à chaque mesure.

Parfois entièrement seul aux commandes, Covert tisse des paysages atmosphériques hantés par des synthétiseurs analogiques au parfum de bande-son italienne d’épouvante (Goblin, Frizzi, Libra). Ailleurs, il convoque ses acolytes Nate Schenck à la basse et Jack McKevitt à la guitare pour des incursions plus bruyantes, tordues, mathématiques — on pense à Grails, aux ProjeKcts de King Crimson ou encore au Battles des grands jours.

C’est une expérience foisonnante, énergique, cinématographique, pleine d’angles vifs et de recoins brumeux. Un disque à multiples visages, où chaque piste est un couloir vers un ailleurs vibrant.

Tireless drummer for Space Blood, Droughts, and Rust Ring, William Covert dives headfirst into the hazy depths of Dream Void — a release as playful as it is hallucinatory. Straddling the lines between avant-prog, free improv, noise, and synth-drenched post-rock, this EP gleefully defies categorization at every turn.

Sometimes entirely solo, Covert crafts atmospheric soundscapes haunted by expressive analog synths, echoing the eerie charm of late '70s/early '80s Italian horror soundtracks (Goblin, Frizzi, Libra). Elsewhere, he joins forces with bassist Nate Schenck and guitarist Jack McKevitt for noisier, more twisted excursions into math-rock territory — calling to mind Grails, King Crimson’s ProjeKcts, or Battles at their most intricate.

It’s a rich, energetic, and cinematic experience — full of sharp turns and foggy recesses. A many-faced record where every track opens a new corridor into a vibrant elsewhere.
