I had a dream
My great grandmother’s grandmother found me
She led me to a stream
When we peered into the water
Our reflection was the same
I felt as though I knew her
Though I didn’t know her name

She turned and took my face into her warm, worn hands
And when looked at her I saw the same lost plans
She had seen enough to take the light from her eyes
But she was full of wonder and her good heart was wise

The longer that she held me I felt love personified
She told me she would hold me until all our tears were dried
She told me she would hold me til the light was back inside
And that she knew the cost of all I’d tried

We walked out to the sea
And when we stepped into the water
Our reflection was the same
I felt as though I knew her though I didn’t know her name

And when she pulled my hands into her gentle palms
I felt the love within her and my soul was calmed
She had learned enough to keep the fire in her eyes
She was full of wonder and her good heart was wise

The longer that she held me I felt myself unfold
She told me she would hold me til I broke the mould
She told me she would hold me til we weren’t controlled
And finally all stories could be told
