Trans Northern by Nathan Carlson
"Trans Northern" is my second album. I was inspired by the Trans-Siberian Railway and all things Russian, and this album marks a steady progression of the music I composed for my first album Dreamstate and my first EP Starfall, and to a lesser extent Cloud Structures. After this album I'm moving off from more traditional synthesizer music and onto different sounds and styles.
The album is my first real concept album, and I'm attempting to capture what it might be like to travel across Russia on the Trans Siberian Express from Moscow in the west, to Vladivostok in the east.
Musically this one relies on sequencers a lot, and the melodies are more straight forward than my previous efforts, but the simplicity of the melodies makes the compositions work a lot more than the more complex ideas I tend to write. I also tried to achieve a stronger sense of continuity with this album and tell a story in music, something I started doing with Starfall (Cosmology I and II), and am now improving on with this one.
Part VI is, for me, the centerpiece of the album. The voice-overs were provided by Natalija Zdan, a Russian mate who teaches Russian via YouTube. It is her contribution that makes this album, and I am forever grateful.
