Phenomena (kc010) by Wataru Abe

Wataru Abe is a versatile musician and composer from Tokyo, Japan. He has a rich musical background having studied classic to jazz music theories at Berklee College of Music, and bunch of sound programming including MAX/MSP. He has previously released several pop ambient and folky band albums under the group murr*murr, Ruibyat and Papa Joe, and this Phonemena is his 1st solo album using his real name. I must say the fans of the formentioned groups will be astonished by this album because it’s nothing like what he has put out before. The 8 tracks hereunder are straight forward glitchy techno with high frequeny noise and heavy beats. But like with his other projects, Wataru not only plays by his instincts, but all the sounds are skillfully controlled following his aesthetics. For instance, all the filtering, compressors and EQs are intentionally eliminated, and he focuses on layering diverse sounds to figure out how to make the most of perceiving the sounds physically. Thus his concept is how to make the piece sound “musical” just by the output of the original sound algorithms. Play this album loud and we assure you will get addicted in seconds, but on the other hand you will be amazed by how precise and dense this music is.

Wataru Abe is a first solo release from kaico, a sub label of SPEKK, Tokyo organized by Tomoki Takeuchi.
