I sailed across the tepid seas of fever-haunted sleep
Where prehistoric palaces yet glimmered in the deep
I breathed the resin-scented air in groves of ebony
Where voices of forgotten dreams still wove their melodies

I tasted of forbidden wine not meant for mortal man
That left me lying broken on the opalescent sands
I wept for all the dreams I lost and all I’d never know
And there it was she found me on that night so long ago

Oh dreamer, she cried, you must wake and depart
The dreamlands hold no place for you
They’ll tear you to pieces and shatter your heart
Your mind cannot fathom the truth

For days I did wander, a man half alive
In the world of the waking I stayed
Dreamless, I tossed in my bed late at night
Unheard were the words that I prayed
For years did I toil to return to that place
Banished to dreams cold and gray
Until I had nearly forgotten her face
And the colors that no man can name

Oh dreamer, she cried, you must wake and depart
The dreamlands hold no place for you
They’ll tear you to pieces and shatter your heart
Your mind cannot fathom the truth

And then one night I found my way back to the ebon grove
And there against a faceless horde of guardians I strove
I cast them down there one by one till I remained alone
And there I held my ground with a heart as hard as stone

I will not turn away, I swore, it’s here that I will stand
Until you’ve made a place for this dreamer in your land
You will not cast me out again… not without a fight
For I have earned my place among the shadows of the night

And then I heard her laughter
And then I saw her smile
As colors that no man could name
Now glittered in her eyes
You’ve earned a place among us now
The spirit said to me
But though you may have claimed the right
It’s not where you should be

Oh dreamer, she cried, you must wake and depart
The dreamland’s depending on you
You carry our hopes now inside of your heart
And your world has forgotten the truth
