For his sixth album, Nick Hempton has penned a handful of straight-down-the-pipe hard bop swingers, assembled a gang of the grooviest badasses on the New York scene, and put down nine tracks of cooking organ jazz that will transport you straight to a Greenwich Village basement club at 3AM.
Night Owl was recorded direct to tape, without isolation, to give that rich, warm sound we all loved on the classic 60s organ records; and the stellar rhythm section count organ jazz legends Lou Donaldson, Dr Lonnie Smith, and Melvyn Rhyne among their past employers. So loosen your tie, pour a drink, and get ready to dig “Night Owl.”
