I started this tracks in late March. Just laid down some preliminary ideas and then had to leave them for a time. Then, in mid-April, I had the opportunity to fly west and happened to have a window seat. I captured quite a few images of the clouds and open terrain as we crossed Arizona. Eventually the sun was setting as we were landing in Phoenix, the "valley of the sun."
Photography has always inspired me – my own and others' images. There is certainly a connection between those preliminary tracks and the impressions of clouds, light, shadow, and sun I saw that evening from the vantage point of several miles in the air.
To me, the view from an airline window is always inspiring. It is expansive and a direct metaphor for the ideal of seeking a broader, wider, and far-reaching view of ideas and concepts. I think that notion is present in these tracks. They are more expansive, there is more space and air in the counterpoint. The pulse is foundational without being overwhelming. And the lyrical nature of the melodic lines seem reflective of the ultra-smooth slow-motion of the scene passing outside the window at the imperceptible speed of 500 miles per hour.
The music was recorded in Logic with NI Monark and Massive, Arturia Pigments, and Spitfire Audio pianos.
Ambient with neoclassical and electronics. I try to express beauty and soul in my music. I started with a VCS3 and a 2340 deck! Along the way I have written and produced my opera with a NEA grant, and worked with amazing musicians. I will always be fascinated by analog synthesizers, digital processing, tape loops, and found sounds.
