The open road could be a highway that takes you places, maybe to what you thought was happiness. But you found it was a lonely place and not what you expected. The open road can be a metaphor for a careless abandon, an addiction or a perception of freedom; it's hard to leave it behind but now you want to be free of the desires. Now, you want the open road to take you literally to home or home is sense of peace and contentment.
