As simple as my groove-inspired music often sounds, it’s powered by much deeper thought than you might expect. Sometimes I express a portion of it. Revolution Resolution is about cycles – the repetition in the music changing ever so slightly like a daily schedule, the calendar year, movement around the sun, and even the harmonic structure of the entire album. It also celebrates a shift in direction, progress, achievement, and expanding our identity.

This year has been a journey of expression and collaboration, and the ability to learn from and react to others in a creative environment – often from a home recording platform. I released at least one single per week, often featuring guests. Then it hit me that one of the people I play with most hadn’t been featured, so the concept behind Revolution Resolution started as playtime for us. The album was recorded in layers. We started by recording bass & drums together before we knew what would transpire. Then, I improvised all 12 tunes in one morning session. I simply listened and reacted while I was recording. This was followed by my debut melodica performance – also improvised during recording. We decided keys would be the perfect supportive role, and percussive elements were the icing on the cake. Upon completion, I realized the players that fell into this project were literally just my reggae trio: The Sunshine Melodies.

Pitches on tenor steel pan are often arranged counterclockwise in a pattern known as the “Circle of Fifths.” Scientifically, this eliminates as many sympathetic vibrations as possible, limiting the crunchy sounding “crosstalk” between the notes on an instrument classified as an idiophone, in which the entire body of the instrument vibrates to produce a sound. Playing each subsequent note in a clockwise pattern produces the inverse, or circle of fourths. Major, minor, or alternate mode, the pieces of this record appear in this order of tonal centers: A, D, G, C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, C#, F#, B, and E, which presents a tonally smooth listening experience.

12 instrumental pieces, covering 12 tonal centers, and named after 12 months. Released on the first day of the new year. When added together, the total playtime is 20 minutes and 25 seconds. It’s an honor and a privilege to create music. Music transcends borders and boundaries of location, time, and culture. Digging deep into music is learning about these histories and cultures. I want to pay respect to the chain of sonic creators before me. My steel pans were crafted in the 1990s by Trinidadian master builder/tuner Dr. Ellie Mannette and are still maintained by his long-term apprentice Chanler Bailey. The musical melting pot that inspires me includes genres and sounds blended from multiple regions - Trinidad, of course, followed closely by Jamaican reggae and ska, often interwoven with global influence from far and wide. I rely heavily on improvisation in my process: composition, recording, and performance. Technology has advanced the exchange of information in such a rapid way that we can learn and build together rapidly from around the globe. Music travels, develops, transforms, and returns. Recording is a spotlight on a single moment of this process - a single moment that we’ve often taken the time to revisit and redevelop. I am not trying to be another musician, but like any creator, my output is limited to ideas that stem from whatever input and experience I’ve gained along the way through life. Creating through this lens of experience is one of the ways I enjoy life. I urge you not just to listen to music, but to hear and experience music. Let the sounds influence your vibe. Travel.
