PRIMETIME by Buen Chico

Leeds indie pop old timers Buen Chico are back with their long-awaited fourth album, ‘PRIMETIME’ - their first full length since 2016’s ‘Working For A Work Free Future’.

The lengthy gestation period, necessitated by the gestation of several actual babies amongst the families of the bands’ members, has resulted in a focussed, carefully crafted album full of ear worm choruses. Says singer Morgan:

“In writing previous albums, I’ve always felt some pressure to get something finished within a reasonable time frame. This time, there was no avoiding the fact that the album was going to take a while to complete because of family commitments. This forced me to take the time to live with each new song, honing it, refining it, and fixing anything that irritated me. I called it PRIMETIME because I tried to make every song a real stand out, attention grabby nugget of pop goodness.”

Lyrically, there are familiar Buen Chico themes of corruption, greed, environmental degradation and dancing. But there’s also a little more of the personal in there, in the “why am I unable to speak my mind”-anxiety of ‘Because I’m Boring’, or in the dissection of the singer’s relationship with music in closer ‘Singers, Songs, Songwriters’.

Morgan again: “I’ve said to a lot of people over the past few years that we were making the best Buen Chico album ever, and I stand by that. Also, I tried to write a song about how much I love CD box sets but it never quite came together - maybe next time.”
