Waltz by Rex

Aptly set in lilting ¾ time, Rex’s 1996 EP Waltz is a melancholy exercise in melding genres. From the distortion-laden guitars that evoke shoegaze on “Blue Eyes You’re Not,” to a heart-wrenching accordion on “Sorry,” to bluegrass-inspired banjo and slide guitar on “Willow Garden,” the four-tack EP spans both time and space. In classic Rex fashion, all of it hovers beneath a filmy veneer of distortion and reverb, reminding the listener that Rex is a decidedly slowcore band.
