Spaceland by Richard Sinclair Band

"This is a little workshop gig for us; because like we've only just met each other about thirty minutes ago."

An under-rehearsed and therefore somewhat shambolic performance with a pickup band in Los Angeles. I called this a "Richard Sinclair Band" release because they're playing his music, but essentially it is Richard backed by Richard Derrick's band Solo Career.

This concert was done at the request of, and as a favor to, Richard Derrick. The two Richards had met (and briefly played together) a decade earlier, during Richard's two solo tours of the United States.

At the time of this concert, February 2004, Richard S. was staying at a beach house in Ventura, Southern California "rehearsing for a week the bloody middle eight" with the band Glass, with whom he would play BajaProg just a couple of days later.

Richard Derrick's own band－Solo Career－were all good players but the concert with Richard S. was a spontaneous performance, without any rehearsal and it shows.

Mr. Derrick was also responsible for bringing Kevin Ayers to the United States four times.

"In LA Richard got a gig at Spaceland, a well-known club, maybe 2004 or 2005. He was the last of 3 acts and maybe 8 people were there specifically to see him. This despite LA Weekly giving him one of their "gigs of the week" recommendations. I actually convinced the previous band (Slow Signal Fade) and some of their fans to stay to see him. I shouldn't have. Richard is one of my favorite artists of all time so this is difficult. Completely unrehearsed, with a pickup band that didn't know the music. Someone shouted "ditch the band. Play songs you actually know." Sadly there weren't many of those on that particular night."

Richard has some really exciting plans for his live shows this Spring, with many unusual line-ups and lots of prestigious and exciting guest participants. As I write this, Richard is in California, rehearsing with Glass who will back him for his appearance at Baja Prog on March 3rd. Glass is the band of Progman Cometh festival mastermind & drummer Jerry Cook, obviously they're big Canterbury fans and I can't wait to hear the results of this pairing. On Saturday, Richard played a solo support slot for the Zombies (Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent) and yesterday (Feb 29th) he was at Los Angeles's Spaceland with local players Ken Rosser (guitar), Richard Derrick (bass) and Bob Lee (drums).
