From ’62 and produced by Chet Atkins, ‘Happy Journey’ confirmed him as the king of melancholy, a light programming staple that aches with all the pain of a Sunday afternoon where sales of alcohol are not permitted and 7pm seems a long, long way away. ‘Happy Birthday To Me’ is a stonewall tearjerker laced with loneliness and his version of ‘I Can’t Stop Loving You’ is a gem. Happy? He’s not.
