Boot Cycle Audio proudly presents “Patterns Various” by Samuel Sharp - a unique album of cyclic pieces for saxophone and electronics. The inspiration behind “Patterns Various” comes from patternistic phenomena Sharp has observed over the years, ranging from traditional English Maypole dancers, starling murmurations and fireworks to the simple joys of catching leaves and pushing swings with his children. Each piece has some degree of improvisation within: some are completely composed on the fly, whilst others are more through-composed with a more restricted menu of options for adlib.

Samuel recorded the album live at his studio in Hackney and then passed the baton over to Emre Ramazanoglu (Ill Considered/Noel Gallagher/Theon Cross) for mixing duties. Using a cutting-edge 8D approach, the result is a fully immersive listening experience, which unlike binaural audio sounds rich and deep across all formats. This includes headphones, traditional speakers and even mono systems such as digital radios and smart speakers.

“Patterns Various” marks a new stripped down milestone in Sharp’s output - gone are the arsenal of wind controllers, keyboards, laptops, and iPads to be replaced instead with a simple pedal-board of delays, reverbs and harmonising effects with no backing tracks, loopers or triggered samples to be seen. This more constant stream of live sax provides a degree of intimacy and immediacy, but don’t be fooled - the wide range of warped and glitched effects on offer transport the listener through extra dimensions and evolving landscapes on a grand scale.

The bulk of Sharp's work to date has been released under the artist name Lossy. As a touring musician he has performed with the likes of Hackney Colliery Band, Augustines, Hollie McNish, Introducing Live (DJ Shadow Project) and Stephen Crowe. As a session musician and producer his collaboration and remix portfolio includes artists as diverse as Phil Selway (Radiohead), Uno Helmersson (The Bridge), Roska, Laura Mvula, Bawrut, Nick Luscombe’s Musicity, Beverley Knight and Ben Taylor.
