Paul Rose, aka Scuba, has defined and refined the sound of the underground across the last two-plus decades. The Berlin-based Brit was at the heart of the first wave of bass, then evolved into gritty techno and more melodic house over the next decade before serving up a thrilling mix of hardcore and breakbeat with his duo of 'Digital Underground' mixtapes in 2023 and 2024. His Music Not Diving podcast has become an influential voice in the scene with unique stories from some of its main architects. Back in 2011, Sasha supported an early Scuba EP, which encouraged him to explore more house and techno. Following his 'Animatronic' EP here in May, he is now back with another brilliant pair of tracks.

The wonderfully moody 'Archives' opens up with slow-burning menace from the dubby mid-tempo drums and sparse synth notes. Occasional melodic flourishes cascade down the groove before a breakdown resets, and percussion then joins the bouncy kicks and taught chord loops. It's a track to build tension, lock in the floor, and lead them somewhere new. 'Meteors' is more raw and direct, with another buoyant mix of drums and cavernous bass wired up with subtly rousing synths and twinkling keys that bring cosmic energy. The suspenseful, progressive groove is designed for full immersion and is a masterclass in maintaining careful dance floor tension.
