Dungeon Genesis by Anachronistic Fiefdom
Part 1 of a Furnace Tracker Speedrun.
Dungeon Genesis was written over the course of two days utilizing the YM2612 sound chip found in the Sega Genesis; done via Furnace Tracker. Besides tape saturation & reverb, all sounds come directly from the Sega Genesis sound chip. This was my first time actually writing anything in a tracker, so I wanted to test myself by setting an arbitrary time limit in order to see what I could create within the limitations of the 80's sound chip in a couple days tops. It was a fun experiment. Now, to take a lore dump in the form of a short story poem.
In the city of Raal
I found myself overtaken
With the scent of the market roasts;
Skewered Gremloks by the dozen,
Scamp haunches on the spit;
All sorts of strange yet alluring meats
Drifting on the dampened air of the Sebra.
It sure beat the usual stench of piss & shrooms
That stank up the whole of the Lands Beneath.
I'd been a few days with nothing to eat
Before arriving to the city over the deep
With naught but my chitin armor
& a kris bent out of shape;
duller than a deaf at the hippodrome.
I had a few bits of amber on me
Though I wasn't eager to lighten my purse.
Not just yet, I thought to myself
As I yanked the hind leg of a scamp
Straight off the fire in a second
When eyes were scarce.
Turning to bolt I ran headfirst into
A city guard, a Nebacean at that.
Surely my eyes deceived me
& that madness dust I'd huffed
The day before was still providing
The odd hallucination... Surely.
It couldn't actually be a Nebacean,
A fekking giant, in Raal?!
Not knowing how to proceed
I sank my teeth into that scamp's hiney
Burnt hair & all, hoping to get at least
One mouthful of meat before
Getting thrown into a dank chamber
For my stinginess.
I gulped it down mostly unchewed
but couldn't help but feel that it was worth it.
Thankfully for me, the Nebacean
was rather fond of amber;
So upon handing over the haunch
Along with the rest of my savings;
I only had to spend three cycles in the dungeon
Instead of Raal's standard six,
& there was Muttstool growing in the corner;
Enough for a near death experience.
Then the guard would have to come inside
To see what the racket was all about.
Unfortunately for me he wasn't in the mood
To mingle with the likes of me,
& I'd bungled up the dosage.
I laid there against the stone
Foaming at the mouth
Wondering why I spent all that amber
On a quickened sentence
Just to die now.
