Eating sand- the starving man goes through the motions that kept him alive
As he buries himself from the inside
Drinking dust- he’s always guided by memories directing his hands
As his body’s entombed by their demands
The thirsty man- he remembers when all that he needed was at hand
Each moment like sugar lost in sand

Away with words- can’t reveal this love
That pools like blood in his throat- congeals

And he’s eating sand- the starving man goes through the motions that kept him alive
As he buries himself from the inside
The dying man collapsing- forces of instinct directing his tongue
Lips that move as they did when they were young

Not far away from you he lies in dunes, teeth cracked
And still the sand consumes
