Peacock Eyes by Solki

The opposites do a full turn and touch each other.

The second album by Solki is an intricated domino game played by three players – Serena Altavilla, Alessandro Gambassi e Lorenzo Maffucci – and disclosed by musician-producer Alessandro Fiori. They chose the peacock as an image of frailty, beauty, contradictions in human connections.

“Peacock Eyes” is a concise argument about vanity and the mistakes that it both causes and looks for. The eyespots on the peacock train feathers reveal themselves as an open dilemma, hidden behind a gorgeous yet awkward symbol of rebirth.

“Peacock Eyes” achieves a fusion which is more solid and neater than the lo-fi game of Solki’s debut album, though the band essentially keeps their rooted dream punk instrumentation.

Serena Altavilla’s silvery vocals address the nine songs, laid against the guitar counterpoint and the radical rhythm phrasing carried out by a drum set shrunk to its strictly necessary elements.

A few other instrumental colors, such as violins and synthesizers, are spread over this fabric by Alessandro Fiori, who recorded the album – live, at the most – through a couple of days of springtime work at the Studio Rudere, in the woods of Tuscany.

«There is such an ideal place: an elevated point of view, a hill that overlooks a flatland. From above we observe different conflicts: vanity concealing despair and lack of attention; desire of possession tied to a person as we want him or her to be; desire and yearning for people that we don’t truly know. One can find, hidden in some dark region, the courage to appreciate the ugliness of beautiful things».
