The trio—Yusuke Kono, Yuta Omino, and Makoto Otsu—hailing from distinct backgrounds, creates a sound that resonates beyond genre and stylistic boundaries.
Formed in 2023, they released their self-titled debut album *Soundtype* in 2024, drawing attention for their borderless musicality. Now they present their second album, *Soundtype 2*, a work of further refinement. While deepening their commitment to the piano trio format even more than on the debut, they incorporate interlude-like structures in tracks #1 “Sequelude -2-” and #5 “Intermission.” The latter features KENTA!, a rapper rooted in both Tokyo and California, whose versatile style breathes fresh energy into the album.
Track #12, “Above & Beyond,” expands the ensemble’s scale with guest appearances by saxophonist Shoubun and guitarist Zack Auslander.
With a sharp, forward-looking approach reminiscent of a Japanese counterpart to *Black Radio* and melodies that linger long after listening, *Soundtype 2* marks the next evolutionary step for a group transcending the confines of jazz.
