Stop Squawkin is the closest Stone Deep has ever come to a hardcore/metal track with its lumbering slow sections and machine-like fast sections. The lyrics, which chide the listener for endlessly complaining, take a free approach – vacillating from poetic impressionism, to plain-as-day“shut the fuck-up!” directives. Again Cartwright and Hayes run a relay race through the verses. Guitarist Glen Cummings alternates between a notched wha pedal and a talkbox creating menacing, gurgling guitar sounds. Imagine Charlie Brown’s imaginary teacher drowning – "wha, wha, wha". Local radio personality Heather Lose – from Nashville’s Lightning 100 – performs a strident diatribe against nothing in particular, during the hard-driving bridge section.
