Silhouettes by Taylor Ngiri Seaberg
Seaberg and the Velvet Punks is a band that encompasses the lyrical and musical arrangements of Black genderqueer guitarist, Taylor Seaberg. Featured collaborators on the album are Carlos Kelley (drums) and Joshua Maxwell (bass). The name “Velvet Punks” stands for any players that join with the soulful brainchild to emphasize the kick and splatter of punk with a tapestry of neo-soul charm and smoothness.
The album name, "Silhouettes" details the dark shape or outline of a person. So many of the songs are built around loss, distance, depression, mania, break ups, addiction, and failure. "Tricksy" is about ghosting after an intense break up and the relationships that spiral out of control until you are nothing more than wayward strangers, a silhouette of a friendship or a romantic encounter. “Clarity” is about clawing your way back up so you “Don’t Let The World Control You.” When relationship permanence seems impossible as a nomad how do you navigate through sustainable personhood and community?
