Northern [EP] by Charles Foster Kane
Charles Foster Kane (CFK) existed for nearly ten years and in that time did nearly everything and achieved nothing.
If you take a small part of The Cure, Nick Cave, Duran Duran or the Smiths and combine it with the pomp of Suede and Pulp you will get a rough idea of what CFK were about.
Some people loved what we did, others absolutely hated it, but most people who saw us play knew it. With over 600 shows from Qld to Sth Australia and back again many times over the band pushed the live thing as hard as just about anyone.
One week we would be playing a Wednesday night at Rics to forty drunken punters with little regard to their Thursday morning responsibilities. Two weeks later it could be a sell out crowd at The Healer or The Zoo. One week later, twenty three people at a bar in regional NSW whilst in transit on yet another trip to try and ‘crack’ Sydney and Melbourne. We found ourselves on a bunch of support slots, a Livid festival or two as well as a Big Day Out line up that was characterised by the traditional heat, humidity and failing musical equipment.
CFK released three EPs in total and recorded an unmastered album titled ‘Monuments’ that never saw the light of day.
The first EP ‘Northern’ was produced by Grant McClennan and recorded at the very first version of the now iconic Airlock Studios. The other EPs featured production work by our steadfast friends Magoo and Jeff Lovejoy with the final album seeing Tim Powells from The Church behind the glass.
