PTHS by Glass

Tracks 1-7:
On December 21st, 1972 Glass played a concert in the Port Townsend High School Auditorium. There's something "magical" about this auditorium, and I feel a special connection to it. The very first rock band I ever heard in person, 1960's Port Townsend teen rockers The Mob, I heard there when I was still in Junior High School (1967). The drummer in that band was a guy named Paul Black.

This 1972 concert may be the concert many PTHS students remember as their first exposure to Glass. It was a big deal to us too, as we had been living in Olympia, Washington while my brother Greg attended TESC (The Evergreen State College) and this was kind of a "homecoming" of sorts. It's also a very rare period in Glass history in that among the instruments we were experimenting with at the time was a beautiful set of Musser Vibes. My brother Greg amazed everyone (including us) by showing exactly how a one-armed man could play this difficult instrument. I remember watching him onstage as he played all over that thing, sometimes using the two mallets in one hand and at other times holding one of the mallets in his teeth as he took off on a solo. All I could do was smile baby-wide. Amazing. This is the only existing performance recording of Glass music with vibes.

Tracks 8-13:
A little over six weeks later, February 6 & 7, 1973, we returned to the PTHS auditorium with our brand-new Mellotron (which Greg traded in the vibes to buy), the first Mellotron ever sold in Washington State. This time we set up and recorded all night without any audience. The epic side-long suite "Broken Oars"－shades of "Close To The Edge"!－was the result. In fact, we were still wheeling the timpani out to the van as the students began filing in for first period.

Tracks 14-15:
In the Spring of 1976 we brought our new drummer Paul Black－yes, the same guy－back to PTHS to give him a good airing out, as a farewell concert before we left for New York. As you can hear he was received with wild enthusiasm. Even after we had all graduated, I could still call the principal Mr. Neil Potthoff and ask him if we could use the auditorium to record. Or to stage a concert there. I never once remember him saying "No."
