Lyrics

Do I have to go all the way to Mexico
All those many years ago
To find the closeness that we used to know
Do I have to write letters that get lost in the mail
Spend wishes that just clutter up the stars
Four day dusty bus ride to get to where you are

Lupe crossed the border to find out where her family was from
And I went down there to forget about mine
We’d talk over lukewarm glasses of Coke without rum
And sometimes I’d end up crying
The way the peso’s falling I might as well be back in Texas
At least somebody’s pay me for my pain
And Lupe said, “I thought you come down here saying somebody’s gotta break the chain”
Yeah, somebody’s gotta break the chain

Your immigrant folks won’t let you stake a claim on your rights
You ask me for my insights—me—a grandchild of potato blight
Their ways are so old, no wonder they’re suspicious of the new
When you tell them they can’t know what you’ve been through
Remember: They can throw that same line back at you.

Lupe crossed the border to find out where her family was from
And I went down there to forget about mine
We’d talk over lukewarm glasses of Coke without rum
And sometimes she’d end up crying
I vacillate between generations and cultures till now
I don’t even know which country to call mine
And I said, Lupe, now that you’re down here, think about it
You can take your time
You can take your time

Drunks come at dawn pounding like to bust my door down
While Lupe on the other side of town, she’s shivering
Waiting for the bus to come around
I left the next spring, but Lupe said she’d try another year
We promised over our parting beers
Not to give in to our deepest fears

But this side of the border you’d still find burning questions inside
Bout where you’re going to, where you come from
It’s something you can’t figure out till your time is all gone
And it’s too late to do it over
But that don’t stop us from trying, Lupe
I can picture us musing till our coffee’s grown cold
And it’s late enough that we trust each other
With thoughts we’ve never ever told
The secrets of our very souls
