Lyrics
Oh the towns have been shuttered
And the outside howled and muttered
Sinking ships were drenched in foam
the watchers' fell on deaf ears
The rivers froze with salty tears
The night the trains roll on home
And the streets reek of trash
Their skin afflicted with a rash
Even the wisemen wear no clothes
They will peak to the skies
Mouths agape with worries and whys
Terrified of their own shadows
And all things living must reform
To survive the coming storm
Or else bargain with all they own
And they’ll come out with their hands
Saying “what are your demands”
The night the trains roll on home
All your soils will turn to ash
And the birds craw and laugh
As they fall down onto easy prey
And the worms feast on eyes
As we tally up their lies
And the accused fall to pray
Even the rats heed its call
the captain drapes sailors with a pall
For the boss has left him all alone
And the men who got their tickets late
miss the bell and stay behind the gate
The night the trains roll on home
Oh in their sleep they will stir
They rise restless and alert
the wives say you were only dreamin’
But in the streets they prowl
They greet with a hungry growl
You hear them train horns blowin’
Dancing serpents stir the crowd
and the cheering grows so loud
As lepers strip you from your throne
Yes the water in the palace beneath
Will rush to the edges of your teeth
The night the trains roll on home
And like sheep before the slaughter
You will cry and beg for water
And the screens will flash with all you’ve done
And like ancient royalty
Your possessions spill into the sea
And your names will be forgotten
