compact collapse is a break from routine, break from tradition, break from responsibility.

10 explorations of fragile “mask”-ulinity soaked in wine and emerging as a sound i’ve been calling “paisley romantic” (friends have told me this is a terrible phrase).

the songs started as repetitive and discordant ditties on nylon string guitar, somewhere between maddening and madrigal. but the varied arrangements and production keep things lively, from the left bank skiffle of “pitiful pieta” and “stay, darlin” to the desert americana of “na na na” and “aubergine.” there’s even the near-literal collapse in the (psychic) break of “disgraceful contemplation” to settle you in for the journey.

aaron sternick’s co-production brings clarity and vibe, and sarah jacoby’s ethereal harmonies throughout prevent this from becoming total dude city.

so settle in and collapse for a few, let’s start a new compact.
