Drowning by Torment Of Gloom

Climbing our way out to freedom
Cutting ties no more hurting
Leave all that's in the past
Keep breathing
Move on and do better
Than they could ever
The light ahead gets closer
We are all lost souls trying to find our way to a better place
For Drowning I wanted to tell a story about depression, the anxiety&stress.
We deal with it, some of us struggle with it, it comes back in patterns. Sometimes we are are alone&Drown in our thoughts, it takes all you have to pull through&keep that vortex from getting outta hand.
So with my over thinking, chaotic way of creativity&my own feelings, I brought these ideas together to make what is now titled, Drowning.
Each song sets many moods and describes those emotions. But as the album comes to a close, it ends on a chill note, as it should. which means it’ll resolve soon, and you’ll get back from rock bottom.
Every year I begin work on new material, during the start I’m not sure what will become of the songs, I just let the pieces fall into places as I go along. The first song to be written and recorded is Under The Red Sun. At this early stage, I was thinking of a chill out album something similar to If These Trees Could Talk. As the months have gone by I put the idea on a break as I worked on my beat ep instead, just to take a break because I was sort of burned out with Torment Of Gloom music. It was not until the end of July, that is where I began getting new ideas to put together and this is where the title track came in. Had it recorded quickly, also this is where I met Chad. I was quite excited to have found a friend and a dope drummer. We conversed for days, I gave him some description on how I wanted the drums to sound, including the entire project. For a while it was difficult to settle on the best title, in the end Drowning stuck. I gave descriptions of hip hop like drums, a tight snare, not too much decay, punchy bass drums and to experiment with ideas and to have fun with it. Next Depressed began forming, somewhere in August I think. This song was brought back and made even better from the original, which went by the name of Labyrinth/Labyrinth Within The Mind. I kind of struggled with this one for about a week, trying to record all the parts, making sure everything fit altogether. Throughout the entire project I was running into a lot of recording level issues, to this day I still haven’t figured out a better alternative method. For this song I was thinking of a boombap style of drumming here, but it turned out to something much more than that, the idea grew. I gave some suggestions for the black metal like section, giving some ideas to how the drummer of Dark Funeral usually plays. I said “It’s easy to just blast beat our way through that part, but I think borrowing some techniques from Dominator of Dark Funeral would be sick right here.”.
I always like to push the limits of metal, even though myself, I don’t listen to a lot of it, and sometimes I guess that can look like Torment Of Gloom has some pretentious band members or something. Our methods of making music for TOG is to experiment, have a good time and write dope songs. Not to do things just for the hell of it, because this such song has a time signature of 6/4 or 7/4 and so on… I’m sure you get the idea, haha.
Anyway we were nearing completion with Drowning, I said “Four songs should be enough, I think.”. As I did some thinking, I went through old songs and found a song that was originally going to be placed in Hopelessness. It had no name, the OG song was recorded with the SF 300 fuzz pedal, on recording the final draft I forgot about the fuzz pedal, then thought it’s best without it. So it is cool to have brought another song back from the dead, it’s known now as Frantic. From the beginning I knew Under The Red Sun has to be on this album, so I prepared this one and sent it over to Chad to record drums for it.
Before this though, I was struggling to find a bassist, it wasn’t until the end of completing the guitars and drums for Frantic when I tried looking for someone to join us. It took about a month and nothing there. September is when Chad decided on tackling the bass role, and things were picking right back up. The bass took a month, filling throughout the end of August and September.
I felt like the bass should be in front rather than following the guitars 100 percent of the time, as well as not being hidden far deep in the mix. The drums and bass have quite a lot of low end, so if you have a good system with sub added, that shit be poppin for real. Drums, Bass, and guitars were complete, that was great!
The end of September is when the symphonic strings were coming together, somewhere in the middle of the project I heard epic strings that’ll go well with the creative direction of the project and it was a great move. With the deadline nearing more and more, we pulled through it all and everything was finalized on the twenty seventh of September. For a while I thought we wouldn’t make it in time for the release date, which I already changed once before. The ambient ep “Cosmic Halo” was a quick project to keep the fans interested if Drowning couldn’t come through.
I’m happy that the album was pieced together and out there for you all to enjoy. We thank you all for the support.
