Thinning Scrim from Cryohymn by Void Whispers

At the blurred boundary where existence thins to mere suggestion, "Thinning Scrim" emerges as our terminal statement. We recorded this piece during the final hours of perpetual night, when the station windows revealed nothing but our own reflections superimposed on inky darkness.

The solitary Rhodes piano—modified with contact microphones attached to melting ice blocks—carries the emotional burden of farewell. Each note melts into the next, leaving traces of itself like footprints being slowly erased by falling snow. Between chord changes, you'll hear the building itself breathing through our geophones—devices normally used to detect seismic activity now capturing the micro-movements of our temporary home surrendering to the thaw.

When performed live, we recreate this piece by suspending blocks of ice above the keyboard, allowing meltwater to strike metallic plates as the Rhodes progression unfolds. The audience often reports feeling a peculiar emptiness afterward—a hollowing out that mirrors our experience watching the ice shelf retreat week by week outside our windows.

The static barriers thinning throughout the piece weren't digital effects but actual recordings of radio transmissions failing as atmospheric conditions shifted. Those moments when clarity pushes through, only to be swallowed again by sub-bass null zones, reflect our final days at the station—moments of fleeting connection before isolation reclaimed us.

Inspired by Harold Budd's minimal piano works and the desolate soundscapes of Thomas Köner, "Thinning Scrim" stands as an elegy not just for our time in that frozen outpost, but for something larger—the slow dissolution of permanence itself. The track closes with those hanging resonant frequencies, like the ghost of music that refuses to completely vanish, suspended in air as cold and still as death.
