Whale Song from Wavelengths by Waterhouse

Instrumentation (in order of appearance): Rain, Fretless Acoustic Bass Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Electric Guitar

I tried making a number of field recordings for this album. Unfortunately, I wasn’t pleased enough with many of the results to include them. One exception was this recording of a steady spring rain which I captured from the front porch of my cabin. For this track, I imagine that rain landing on calm seas far out on the ocean where beneath the surface, whales sing their songs, imitated here by the fretless acoustic bass guitar. I sold the electric bass I had used on recent albums and replaced it with this fretless which I thought would be a stronger tonal fit with my other instrumentation. I loved exploring the expressive range of micro-tonalities offered by the lack of frets.
