Bad Luck by West Texas Exiles
"The idea for Bad Luck came from a prompt I received from some friends in a songwriting email thread mid October 2020. Jokingly I mentioned how there are too many Christmas albums and not enough Halloween albums. In an attempt to remedy that, the lyrics and melody began as a tongue-in-cheek, clunky, carnival-esque song that was never meant to see the light of day. As I sat with the nearly discarded idea few days, personifying the idea of “bad luck” began to pull genuine excitement. I chased that down for a few hours and what came was pretty much what you hear on the song.
As the song became more of a serious endeavor, I knew the recording and production had to match the unsettling nature of the lyrics. Dynamic, tender, slow builds of clean vocals and unaltered instruments suddenly exploding with overdriven guitars, distorted vocals, and thunderous drums seemed to be the best musical vessel for which to deliver the sinister lyrics."
