I took a little stroll just to get some air
When I spied a little singer sitting on a brick stair
Leaning ‘gainst the wall of a brownstone facade
Picking through some chords and searching for God

She had a thermos full of warmth and a parlor guitar
A dozen primer bills stuffed in her tipping jar
I stood there in silence and listened awhile
Then after a time she faced me and smiled

I can’t forget the girl
And I’ll never forget her name

After her last song she mentioned a chill
And asked me if I might have an hour to kill
AT a candle cafe we ordered some tea
Then talked until closing
And parted company

Annie Potemkin walked out of the light
I noticed the darkness bringing me sight
She went on to find her fortune and fame
And I just can’t forget that smile
And I’ll never forget her name
